Andria learned at a very early age the value and importance of hard work. She was raised by a single mom who juggled multiple jobs to make ends meet. Andria worked her way through the University of Virginia with work study programs and Pell Grants. And, after working for two Fortune 500 companies, Andria graduated from the Wharton Management Program, ran two small businesses of her own, and was appointed by Governor Mark Warner to chair the Virginia Small Business Advisory Board. She has raised millions of dollars to benefit local initiatives, from the restoration and expansion of the Elizabeth River Trail to the formation of the transformative regional broadband ring to creating the most robust transportation network in Virginia as chair of Hampton Roads Transit. Together with her husband, she has raised three amazing young Norfolk Public School scholars.
A robust educational system is critical to prepare students for a successful future. Andria will always be a reliable advocate of expanding infrastructure investment in public schools, raising teacher pay, expanding early childhood education, internet access, and Career and Technical Education, making childcare sage and affordable to all Virginia parents.
Norfolk suffers from some of the most significant flood risk in the county, second only to New Orleans. Andria has been working to address this as the Co-Chair of the Norfolk Commission on Climate Change, creating the first Climate Action Plan for the region. She has been a tireless advocate on expanding zoning and funding to address flood mitigation, clean energy, and preserving the Chesapeake Bay.
Now more than ever, access to affordable, reliable high-speed internet service is critical for all Norfolk residents for school, work, healthcare and more. Andria has led the creation of a regional broadband ring which will ensure Norfolk residents have more internet options, at lower costs and higher speeds. She brings a critical understanding of broadband and will fight for resources to ensure that Norfolk and the region become the “digital gateway” of the commonwealth.
Small businesses are the backbone of our communities, providing goods and services, but also accounting for nearly half of all employment. Andria is a former entrepreneur and current start-up mentor and understands the critical need to support workforce training and access to financial capital and reduce red tape that prevents new businesses from opening up.
